What's In Your Non-Fiction TBR Pile?

I’ve never actually watched the show 19 Kids and Counting, but I’ve heard of it, and Becky and I were talking about the Duggar family recently. She lent me their book, and I’ve been reading a little of it each night. No wonder there’s a whole TV show about them; they certainly are a fascinating family! Some days I wonder how I’m going to do everything with two little girls around the house soon, so I find it comforting that this family manages with nineteen children! Sure makes two seem like it has to be a breeze. :)

I am especially encouraged by the Duggar family's strong faith and lifestyle. They are obviously very conservative, and I admire that. It takes courage to be so different from the world. Their lifestyle makes me think of this scripture: “Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us” (1 Peter 2:10-12). I’m betting there are plenty of people who watch their show who think they are complete weirdos! And yet, doesn’t God call us Christians to be weirdos here in this world? :)

Sometimes I have to get away from reading fiction, since I’m reading it all the time for work. Lately, for my pleasure reading I’ve just been reading parenting books and now The Duggars: 20 and Counting!. What non-fiction books have you read lately or plan to read soon? Barbour has some great ones available, by the way. Check out some of these recent releases:

The Names of God: An Illustrated Guide

Great post, JoAnne - - and I feel certain you'll do a wonderful job with TWO little girls in your home!~ I have always been fascinated by large families (I have a friend blessed with 13 children!) and have enjoyed watching the Duggars' show (but haven't read the book yet). Besides my Bible, the non-fiction I've been reading lately has been about time management and writing*grin*, and sometimes "just for fun" I peruse my houseplant books (wishing my plants looked like those pictures,LOL). Blessings, Patti Jo :)

I know I wondered when my second child was on the way whether I would have enough love for two. I couldn't imagine loving another child as much as I loved my first...but then my son was born, and in the amazing way God has, He gave this mama the capacity to love even more.

My current TBR pile is all research related.

The New Eldorado: The Fabulous Story of Colorado's Gold And Silver Rushes by Phyllis Flanders Dorset

Roughing It, Mark Twain's memoirs of traveling in the West.

The White Cascade: The Great Northern Railway Distaster and America's Deadliest Avalanche by Gary Krist

I've been reading Beautiful Womanhood by Sandy Ralya. This book is the basis for a mentoring program for wives. I LOVE this book! I used it to train six mentors last fall, and now those women are leading groups. Powerful, Biblical, and very practical.

I've been married 31 years and learned some great things that have made my good marriage even better. I highly recommend it. It's published by a small press, Creekside.

I love the Duggars! They are such a neat family. I'd love to read their book sometime. They have such a wonderful family.

I'm a fiction junkie, but my very favorite book is non-fiction. It's called, "The Family Nobody Wanted" by Helen Doss. It's her telling of how she and her pastor-husband adopted 12 biracial children in the 1940's when such children were considered unadoptable.

I love how she writes about trying to get things done with 12 children under the age of 10, and all their little conversations and escapades and how much she and her husband sacrificed to be able to have a family.
