What's Next for Heartsong?

Several of you are asking “What’s next?” for Heartsong after we’ve filled all the state settings, and I still don’t have a definite answer, but I do have more information than I did back in March when I blogged about this. Right now my files are still wide open to your creative ideas. We haven’t chosen a specific theme yet and we might choose to do a variety of themes.

Here’s what we do know: we still plan to repackage Heartsong books into 3-in-1 collections; we’d still prefer those collections to be by single authors (but we do occasional collections by three authors); and setting-driven titles for these collections do well.

So, with my blog post from April 11 in mind, I’d love to see your fresh, setting-driven, guideline-following Heartsong ideas! :) I suggested to an author this morning that if she has ideas for stories in Chicago they might fit into a possible collection title of Windy City Weddings. Think along the lines of collection titles that still incorporate a specific setting but are different than the state name collections we’ve already done. Then build three great individual story ideas that would fit the collection title. I’m also open to some international settings, and of course I still need both historical and contemporary proposals. Oh, and please remember that you can't copyright a title. Let's say for example that you think of a title of Sunshine Brides for three stories set in Florida. Some other author or editor might think of that, too, and we can use that title even if we don't use your story ideas.

That’s the Heartsong scoop for now! If you have more questions, let me know!

Thanks for the update, JoAnne.

The birthday party pictures are so cute and Jodie is getting so much older. I can't believe she's one.

Are you bringing her to ACFW? We'd all help chase her. :)

Thanks for giving us some ideas of what you might be looking for down the road.

My son turned one on the seventh. So exciting :-)

With submissions, since you're looking for collections, do you prefer all three manuscripts finished or one manuscript and proposals for two more? From an unpubbed writer, that is.

Thanks! :-)

Mary, we would definitely have to chase Jodi, which is unfortunately why I'm not bringing her. I'd love to, but it's probably not wise :) I expect in 2009 that she'll be reading and writing and able to help me work at ACFW, so I'll bring her then. HAHA!

Thanks for your question, Jessica.
First, happy birthday to your little boy! Second, it would be fine for an unpubbed writer to have just the first manuscript complete with proposals for two more.

JoAnn,

Will older hero and heroines be considered...say in their 50's? Or is Heartsong's reader base younger?

Your blog is so helpful. I really appreciate it.

Hi Rose,

We do have many young readers of Heartsongs, but I would say the majority are over 40. I am definitely interested in some hero and heroines who are middle-aged and even older. I blogged about something similar on May 2, 2008 if you haven't already read that post.

I'm glad you find this blog helpful! Thanks for saying so.

Thanks for the information! Now that the state "brides" and "weddings" are winding down, will Heartsong Presents still want a wedding scene in every novel?

I'm happy to read that you are considering international settings. How do I query you?

Katie,
That's a good question - about if we'll require wedding/bridal scenes or not. Unfortunately it's one I don't have a definite answer to yet, but I'll keep you posted.

Angela,
You can query by sending an email to fictionsubmit@barbourbooks.com
